Pilates
Pilates is a system of exercise which emphasises core strength, flexibility and alignment to promote functional movement of the body.
Joseph Pilates
As a young adult in the early 20th century, Joseph Pilates studied yoga, meditation, martial arts, and various Greek and Roman exercises. Whilst working as an orderly in a hospital during WW1, he used this knowledge and training to develop a rehabilitation programme for non-ambulatory soldiers.
Evolution of Pilates
The techniques and exercises have since been developed into various forms and schools but emerging research supports the principles that Joseph Pilates taught as both functional fitness and effective rehabilitation.
Calm and centred
Pilates also puts emphasis on focus, centering and breathing, which can be beneficial in helping to quiet the mind and divert away from the stresses of everyday life. My clients often comment that their Pilates sessions are their ‘me time’, away from all the stresses and demands of their usual life. My garden studio is a little oasis of calm in an increasingly demanding and frenetic world!
